Types Of Poetry For Kids

When it comes to teaching children poetry, there are different types of poetry for kids. Naturally, one cannot expect children to be able to understand the kind of topics and subjects that senior poets write on. The types of poetry for kids are simpler and more comprehendible for them because they can understand these types of poetry as well. One of the various types of poetry for kids are autobiographical ones where the kid is able to give the reader an idea of who he/she is or what he/she likes. Think of this as an ‘about me’ or myself essay except it is written in the form of a poem.

Rhyming poems are another of the different types of poetry for kids. Children can understand and absorb rhyming stanzas and poems better than other types of poems. This type of poetry is also usually more amusing and interesting to kids, too. The most common example of these types of poetry for kids is as follows:

Twinkle twinkle little star

How I wonder what you are!

Kids are usually able to remember this for a long time because the rhyming is easy and it is something that they can comprehend easily as well.

Kids are usually not familiar with diamante. These poems have nothing to do with the content at all. They may nonsensical but the reason that these types of poetry for kids are popular is because of how the poem is structured in writing. This is usually interesting to children because they may not be used to diamante.

Cinquain is another of the various types of poetry for kids. What happens in these is that with each stanza more words are introduced and the line following that line would have even more words as opposed to the first and the second line/stanza.

Then there are those types of poetry for kids that helps them remember their concepts, number or alphabets. An example of this is as follows:

‘One two, buckle my shoe

Three four, shut the door

Five six, pick up the sticks’

This keeps things interesting for kids because they are able to rhyme and remember the concepts well and properly as well. In other types of poetry for kids the first letter of the first word in each stanza would be organized in a way so that the letter of the first word in each stanza would form an alphabetical order. Here is an example-

A young boy was walking in the rain

But he had no umbrella to cover himself with

Can anyone get me an umbrella? he asked aloud.

See how the first alphabet of the first word in each stanza? That is what is important. No importance is given to the rhyming or content as such but the stanza have to be written in alphabetical order from top to bottom and that is how these types of poetry for kids works.
