Types Of Research Design

What are the different types of research design? Research design is composed of methods and processes that are used to help gather data for scientific research. Due to the many different uses of research, there are many different types of research design. The most common types of research design that are used in studies and dissertations are historical research design, case and field research design, descriptive research design or survey research design, correlational research design or prospective research design, developmental research design, experimental research design, and many others.

The historical types of research design are the type that is used to collect and verify data. These are used to synthesize data as well. They establish facts that are able to defend hypothesis. They can also establish the facts that are able to refute hypothesis. Therefore, types of research design are used as primary sources as they are also used in secondary sources. The main problem in these types of research design is properly being able to identify and prove the authenticity and validity of the sources.

Next, we have case research design or field types of research design. These are the so called ethnographic research. These types of research design uses direct observation. They do not, however, give a clear snapshot of the research study. This is the type that is best used when the research is done in a phenomenon that isn’t familiar yet to the researcher. The main problem is that these types only use a few number of subjects.

Descriptive types of research design are those that describe and explain the conditions of the factors involved in the study. They compare and test these factors through questionnaires and surveys. This is actually the most common of all the many different kinds of research design.

Experimental types of research design are those that are best used when dealing with controlled settings. These are the design that uses random assignment. It then explores a certain cause of the different relationships that are brought about by the random assignment. Also, it explores and sightsees the effects of the said relationship that was paired. These partnerships are then changed. Then, the process will take place again. The problem with this research design type is that it is very difficult to do this in real life. Meaning to say, real world settings may not be able to effectively show the accurate results when this is done. However, these types can be best when used in laboratory settings.

Correlational Research design or prospective research design denotes that efforts to explore the relationships of the factors involved. These observations are then used to make predictions. There are also what we call casual comparative research design. This is basically exploring the cases where effects are already set and cannot be changed. The causes, however, can. In other terms, these are a research design method that works backwards as they start with a fixed outcome and the possibilities are the ones being researched. Developmental research design is the type wherein data are being collected at present. These explore the growth of the factors longitudinally.
