No matter what your profession may be, knowing what the types of sentences are is vital as we will one way or the other need to write or say something and it should be composed right. Knowing what the types of sentences are will give us a better understanding and capability of how we communicate. This is why it is very important that we are able to get to know well what the types of sentences are.
There are three basic sentence types. However, once you know these three, you should expand your knowledge more as there will be many different crosses between them. This being said, anyone looking to know what the types of sentences are should be able to identify and write each of these three.
Knowing what simple types of sentences are is very important as this is the most basic knowledge of them all. A simple sentence is basically a sentence that contains a subject and a verb. However, you should know that what types of sentences are should always convey a complete thought. If you are not familiar, the subject is the topic of the sentence. It is what is being talked about. A verb, on the other hand, is the action word that describes what the subject is doing. Good examples of what simple types of sentences are include ‘Lucas plays basketball’ and ‘I am going to the market. In these examples, subjects are Lucas and I while the verbs are plays and going, respectively.
What compound types of sentences are are basically sentences that contain two simple sentences. This means that there will be two subjects and two verbs in the sentence that will also convey a complete thought. The two simple sentences will be joined by coordinating words such as and, or, while, for, but, and many others. Examples of compound sentences are ‘Lucas plays basketball while his brother is swimming’ and ‘I am going to the market and he will cook when I get home’. The subjects are Lucas and brother in the first example and I and he in the second example. The verbs, on the other hand, are plays and swimming in the first example and going and cook in the second one.
Complex sentences are, well, more complex. Here, there will be a simple sentence joined with a sentence that cannot stand on its own. This is called a dependent clause. A simple sentence, by the way, can also be called independent clause as it can stand on its own. Also, complex sentences use words such as because, after, since, and the like to join the two sentences. Examples of complex sentences include ‘Lucas rushed when he remembered that he has homework to do’ and ‘After cooking, I will fix the house’. As you can see in the first example, you have ‘Lucas rushed’ as the dependent clause and the ‘He remembered that he has homework to do’ as the simple sentence. In the next example, ‘After cooking’ is the dependent clause and ‘I will fix the house’ is the simple sentence.
