Memory cards serve the basic function of storing your images or pictures from your camera and there are various types of memory cards for digital cameras which are available in the market and none of these memory cards will affect your image quality. These are available in various sizes, and the difference also lies in the speed. The major types of memory cards for digital cameras are:
Secure Digital Memory Card, also known as SD card are the most common type of memory cards and are compatible with most types of cameras. Even though these are fairly cheap and come in a very small size, the speed while transferring images is slow. Thus, in order to cope with various market changes, there is another version of this card, which is known as Secure Digital Higher Capacity Card. This SDHC card can store a maximum of 32GB data, unlike the SD card which could store only 2GB data. Also, the newer SDHC card can transfer images at a high speed.
Secure Digital ‘Xtra Capacity’ Memory card is also known as SDXC cards. It has a storage capacity which can go upto 2TB. These types of memory cards for digital cameras are not available at a reasonable rate and also the customers have to check whether their camera is able to support this type of technology. The computers should also be in sync with this technology and should be able to read files which are in the format of exFAT.
Compact Flash or CF is another type of memory card which is mainly used in professional DSLRs. These have better storage capacity, are even stronger and work very well when you have to take pictures in adverse weather conditions. These are available in two varieties, i.e., Type 1 and Type 2 and the only difference is that the Type 2 card is slightly thicker. Otherwise, both types of cards are compatible with most professional cameras.
XD or extreme digital memory cards are those types of memory cards for digital cameras which are made by either Olympus or by Fujifilm. These cards can store data of 2GB but these brands can now support other types of SD cards as well.
Memory Stick is that type of memory card which is mainly used in Sony cameras. There are three types of memory sticks available in the market and these are Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick DUO and MagicGate. Memory Stick PRO can store data of 1GB, whereas Memory Stick DUO is smaller version of PRO, and MagicGate is also known as digital rights management and is compatible with very few devices.
Multi Media Cards or MMC are those types of memory cards for digital cameras that can be used as an alternative to various SD cards and these can be used in SD card readers, as well. The only difference is that the rate of transferring image is fairly low.
