Anemia is the condition or state in which a patient does not have required number of red blood cells in their body. We will see different types of blood anemia seen in human beings.
SICKLE CELL ANEMIA
Sickle cell anemia is one among the types of blood anemia that is commonly found in African Americans. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited genetic defect in which the cells of the affected patients become sickle shaped. Such cells will break down quickly and hence the oxygen supply to organs will become difficult and finally result in anemia. Another trouble caused by the crescent shaped cells is that they can get stuck inside small blood vessels because of their shape and result in severe pain.
IRON-DEFICIENCY ANEMIA
Such types of blood anemia are caused by insufficient supply of mineral iron to our body. Hemoglobin is the part of red blood cells that transports oxygen to different parts of our body and they are made inside the bone marrow of our bones and iron is very important in the making of hemoglobin. Insufficient amount of iron in our body can result in the disruption of hemoglobin making and thus result in an iron deficiency anemia finally.
VITAMIN DEFICIENCY ANEMIA
Like mineral deficient anemia, vitamin deficient anemia are the types of blood anemia that are caused by deficiency of important vitamins in our body. Vitamin deficient anemia is mainly caused by the inadequate supply of vitamin B12. Pregnant woman should make sure that they take necessary folate supply to ensure that the baby will be prevented from developing any kind of trouble.
BONE MARROW AND STEM CELL PROBLEMS
Problems associated with bone marrow and stem cells can result in disrupted production of red blood cells. Red blood cells are produced from stem cells and if these stem cells are defected or replaced by defected or cancerous cells, it can result in the inadequate production of red blood cells in our body. The problems caused by such types of blood anemia are aplastic anemia, thalassemia and to toxic conditions of bone marrow.
ANEMIA ASSOCIATED WITH OTHER CONDITIONS
Anemia can also occur due to hormone problems when there is an inadequate supply of hormones required for the making of red blood cells. Kidney diseases can affect hormone production. Kidney diseases in advanced stage will affect the hormone production in general and this will affect the quantity of hormones required for red blood cell productions. Reduced number of red blood cells due to this reason will result in anemia.
Another problem that can affect the hormone production is hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a disorder associated with thyroid gland this can result in improper hormone production, which will eventually lead to disrupted production of red blood cells and related types of blood anemia.
Cancer can be a major reason for anemia because cancer is a disease capable of affecting the stem cells that are responsible for production of red blood cells.
Other reasons include infection, diabetes, old age etc.
