Types Of Memory In A Computer
Computer memory is necessary for storing data and information that can be accessed by a certain processor to make it run programs more efficiently and faster.Actually, the cheapest and most convenient way to enhance the speed of a computer is to install additional memory into it.
Below are the various types of memory in a computer:
RAM-Otherwise known as ‘Random Access Memory’ is one of the types of memory in a computer which is the most common. A certain memory cell can be directly accessed by it. It keeps the current data used, software applications, and operating system in order for such to be easily accessed by a certain processor. It is possible for the processor to write and read from it more rapidly compared to any storage media on a certain computer such as a hard drive, floppy disk or cd-rom.Ram is the kind of storage which is temporary since the data is only present as long as the computer is running. When the computer is shut down, all data in Ram is lost.
VRAM– Otherwise known as ‘Video Random Access Memory’ is one of the types of memory in a computer which is considered a fast-page memory’s version and often present in vacs or ‘video accelerator cards.
DRAM– Otherwise known as ‘Dynamic Random Access Memory’ is one of the types of memory in a computer which is used the most widely. It can store data for a short time and it is necessary to refresh it regularly. It can be measured in nanoseconds (ns) and its storage capacity in megabytes (mb).
SAM-Otherwise known as ‘Serial Access Memory’ is one of the types of memory in a computer which can be considered as the exact opposite of RAM. It can store a succession of certain memory cells similar to what RAM can do. However, in SAM such memory cells are accessed in a subsequent manner the same as cassette tapes.
Shadow RAM– Otherwise known as ‘Shadow Random Access Memory’ is one of the types of memory in a computer which works hand in hand with all the other types of memory in a computer.
Flash Memory – It is a kind of memory chip that is rewritable and which is responsible for combining RAM and hard drive functions. Once the power is off, flash memory is still able to keep the data, it is thus considered stable or non-volatile. Its various advantages include durability, high speed, and low voltage. This is one of the types of memory in a computer which can also be found in devices such as cell phones, audio recorders, printers and digital cameras. It does not function as speedily as RAM yet it can be very durable in the sense that memory cards survive rough handling of all kinds even when immersed in water. This makes this type of memory suitable to all portable uses like MP3 players, camera memory, and ‘thumb drives.’
