Types Of Noodles
Is your stomach making weird sounds because you are starving? If you are looking for a fast way to make your younger go away, just boil some water and throw a pack of noodles in the pot. There are many types of noodles that you can choose from depending on your appetite and your personal likings. There are in fact about 350 types of noodles, but for the purposes of this article, we shall focus only on the most common of those.
Probably the most famous of all types of noodles that you are ever going to eat are the Chinese egg noodles, or ‘E-fu’ in urban language, which are made from a combination of wheat and egg. This is basically the type of noodles you get, when you order at a Chinese restaurant. Their shape and size may vary, and they can be either dried or fresh. Two things are for sure, though: the first is that Chinese noodles need always be boiled in water before they are used in any kind of recipe, and the second is that they are always delicious.
The envious Japanese, however, who are always jealous of the Chinese could not just let the Chinese win this food war so easily; that is why they decided to come up not just with one, but with three types of noodles. The Japanese types of noodles are: ramen noodles, udon noodles, and soba noodles. Ramen noodles are also made from wheat and eggs; they are long and curly, and due to their delicate texture they are an excellent choice for soups. Again, this type of noodle also has to be boiled before it is used in other dishes. Plus ramen noodles have the disadvantage that they have to be consumed soon after you cook them, since they lose their taste quickly when stored in the fridge. Udon noodles, on the other hand, are noodles made from wheat flour, and one has to follow the same boiling pattern before cooking them. Udon noodles are available in the market dried, shrink-wrapped, pre-cooked, and fresh, with the last choice obviously being the best. As for soba noodles, these belong to the buckwheat types of noodles. They are darker in color than most types of noodles and they are basically the Northern Japanese version of noodles.
Last but not last, there are also rice based types of noodles. They come in different shapes and sizes. A rice based noodle (also known as vermicelli) can be long and straight, short and curly, long and rounded, with different degrees of thickness to choose from depending on the kind of recipe you are making. As the name suggests, they are made from a mixture of water and rice, and that is also what accounts for their white, almost transparent color. They are also a good option for soups and for other light meals in general.
As mentioned in the beginning, there are many more types of noodles. Simply visit a food store that specializes in noodles and pasta and let noodles take you on a tasteful journey around the world.
