What are the different types of clouds? When we look at the sky, we see this white cotton like things floating around. These are clouds. We often have a fun time naming the things we see being formed by the clouds. It is a very relaxing and calming thing to do, especially when we’re on a picnic. But do you know that there are many different types of clouds out there? The main different types of clouds are cirrus, stratus, cumulus, and the cumulonimbus.
The cirrus clouds are the types of clouds that are of high altitude. Most of the time, the cirrus clouds are the ones you see over 18000 ft. These are the clouds that are primarily composed of ice crystals. This is why when we look at the sky and see cirrus clouds, we will get reminded of the composition they have – crystal and ice. The movement of these types of clouds is simple – they follow the direction of the wind. They are feathery like and thin looking. These are the types of clouds we see when the weather is stable and winds are mild.
The stratus clouds are the types of clouds that have the lowest altitude. They usually do not go above 7000 ft. These are the clouds that you see when the weather is warm. Due to this, the stratus clouds are composed of many watery drops. These are the types of clouds that are scattered. They are also known to have a harsher look than the other types. These are the clouds that are greyish in color.
Cumulous clouds are the types of clouds that are the lowest. Their bases are only up to 7000 feet low. Given that they are low, they are composed of water drops as well. However, these are the types of clouds that come out when the weather is cold. This is why they can also sometimes be made out of icicles. These clouds are often white in color. They are the most common ones we see across the sky. The main distinguishing factor of types of clouds is that they have a silver lining on their edges. This silver lining makes them look more distinct than the others. Also, among all other types, these are the clouds that can be seen alone. There are also many times that you can see a bunch of them in packs.
Lastly, we have the cumulonimbus. These are the highest flying of all types. They are the clouds that you can see flying over 60,000 feet or so. Also, these are the clouds that you see when the weather is going to be ruggedly hostile. These are the clouds that you see when there will be rain or a storm that is coming. These are the actually the clouds that you see when there are heavy winds and tornadoes. The cumulonimbus are also the clouds you see when there will be heavy winds and heavy rains. Also, these are the clouds that come up when there are thunder storms. This is also because they are known to be able to produce lightning.
