What are the different types of food? Food is essential to our body so that we will be able to perform the body functions well. Technically, we need food to survive. Therefore, it is important that you are able to choose the right food to eat to ensure we have a good wellbeing. There are many types of food. It is important that we are able to eat a balanced meal to get all the nutrients our body requires on a daily basis. The main types of food are proteins, vitamins and minerals, fats, and carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are composed of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. They are the types of food that we eat that are converted to energy. The most common forms of carbohydrates are the different starches and sugars. These are the types of food that are gotten from plants. When carbohydrates are consumed, these types of food are broken down by converting them to be glucose. Then, the liver and the muscles store them as glycogen. You see, the plants around us use carbohydrates to store starches. Animals, on the other hand, are the ones who use protein to store excess fat. The most common food under the carbohydrates category are cereals, legumes, starchy roots, sugars, fruits, vegetables, syrups and preserves. The energy that we get from carbohydrates is mostly used for the internal activities of the body which includes breathing, digestion, etc. and the external activities that include walking, and other physical movements of the body.
Proteins are also composed of oxygen and hydrogen. However, there is an additional component – nitrogen. These are basically molecules that are composed of amino acids. Proteins are also composed of phosphorus and sulphur. The main uses of these types of food in our body include enabling growth and development, building body structures, enzymes, and hormones. These proteins are types of food that are used for many systems in the body including the digestive and the immune systems. The most common sources of protein include fish, meat, eggs and other dairy products.
Fats are types of food that are not water soluble. This means that they do not dissolve in water. They are mainly composed of glycerol and other fatty acids. These fats are can also be called lipids. There are many sources of fat out there. Some of the most common sources of fat include meat, oils, and fish. There are many different uses of fats in the body. These include being able to store energy, being used to build nerves and maintain the health of the brain, insulate the body, and many more.
Lastly, we have the vitamins and minerals. These are the substances that organize the body’s health and diet. There are two main categories of these. The main categories of vitamins and minerals are water soluble or those that dissolve in water and fat soluble or those that stay in the body through fat. Minerals, on the other hand, are those that are non-organic. They are the ones critical and maintaining the health of the bones and the teeth. The best thing about these is that you can pretty much find them in anything you eat.
