Types Of Network Management
types of network management
Network management is concerned with maintenance and administration of huge networks, in the top-level. There are different types of network management, which can also be considered as different levels of network management. However, the functions of all the different types of network management levels are to ensure security, control, monitoring, allocation etc.
International standards organization (ISO) has defined five types of network management and we will discuss about the practical suggestions that should be followed to implement these five types of network management in an efficient and effective manner.
1) FAULT MANAGEMENT
Fault management is one of the types of network management that has multiple responsibilities such as detection of errors, notifying users and also to fix certain network errors to ensure the swift and smooth functioning of the entire network. Fault management is considered as very important because errors and faults in a network can result in the downtime or total degradation of the network, which is unacceptable.
2) CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT
Configuration management is concerned with monitoring the system configurations and networks in order to tackle the effect made on the network system due to variation in hardware components. Even if it looks like a simple level among the other types of network management levels, configuration management is very important in ensuring the fast functioning of the network.
3) PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
Performance management is one of the types of network management that monitor various network aspects and analyze them to gather information that are required to fulfill various client needs. Collection of various performance metrics at the device, protocol and interface level is very important. A type of network management system, which can be used for collecting data, is called as polling engine. The polled data can be stored, presented and collected in almost all types of network management systems.
4) SECURITY MANAGEMENT
Security management is the level, in the types of network management levels, which is responsible for safeguarding the network from any sabotage attempts that are caused by unauthorized accesses, which are intentional or unintentional.
Security management systems monitors all login attempts made by users and decides on whether to allow or deny access to them depending on certain criteria. Security management is a broad level among the different types of network management levels because security is as important as reliability in a network system.
5) ACCOUNTING MANAGEMENT
The types of network management that is responsible for keeping check on the network usage by clients so that the network allocation for individual and group users along with chargeback can be done accordingly. Unlike other types of network management levels, accounting management is not very important in deciding the network performance, efficiency, security and reliability as a whole because accounting management is mainly concerned with independent clients or users and managing their network utilization.
The different types of network management levels are basically certain fundamental protocols that must be considered while designing a network, whether it is a large or a small network, for the swift and smooth functioning of the network.
