Types Of Neurological Diseases
A neurological disease is a disease which happens when the nervous system of our body, which consists of nerves, spinal cord and the brain, is not able to function properly, thus there are various types of neurological diseases that can impact our day to day activities such as, walking, learning, speaking, breathing and even swallowing. It can affect our mood, sense and even our memory and can lead to seizures, paralysis, and muscle weakness.
The major types of neurological diseases are: muscular dystrophy, Huntington’s disease ( these are caused due to faulty genes); spina bifida( it is caused due to abnormal development of our nervous system); Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease( these are caused when our nerve cells gets damaged); strokes, epilepsy, injuries in brain or spinal cord, meningitis, and brain tumors.
Huntington’s disease is generally known as HD and is that types of neurological diseases which in inherited and effects our basic abilities of swallowing, talking, or walking. The major symptoms of this disease are clumsiness, problems in balancing and one may develop movements which are uncontrollable. Apart from this, sometimes patients may not be able to recognize his friends or family or may not be able to express what he is feeling. It can be detected with the help of blood tests and there is no medical cure to HD.
Muscular Dystrophy affects your muscles and weakens it, and finally affecting the ability to walk. There is no cure to this disease, but various modes of treatment such as physical therapies or surgery can prevent complications.
Spina Bifida is that types of neurological diseases that happen due to the birth defect either in brain or in spinal cord. It is caused when the spinal column during the first month of mother’s pregnancy, is unable to close and thereby damaging the spinal cord and the nerves. One can face difficulties in learning or problems in urinary bladder.
Alzheimer’s Disease is generally known as AD and affects a person’s ability to perform daily tasks and activities. In primary stages, AD affects the thought processes and thus, a person may start forgetting things. As it grows, one may develop problems in remembering faces or names, may not be able to read or write properly and can even become aggressive or anxious. Only medications can help in preventing some if its symptoms.
Parkinson’s disease is caused when dopamine, a brain chemical, is not produced adequately by our nerve cells. The symptoms of this disease are shaking of hands, arms, or legs, stiffness among arms, legs, and difficulty in movement and in maintenance of balance. As it grows, one may have difficulty in speaking. Surgery and sometime brain stimulation can prevent this disease to grow further.
Strokes are caused when the blood flowing in the brain tends to stop and as a result, the cells in brain starts getting damaged or they may even die. This may result into severe headaches. Epilepsy is that types of neurological diseases that cause seizures and thereby, it causes behavioral changes and even leads to change in sensations.
