Types Of Writing
What are the different types of writing? When we are in school, we are always asked to write papers, researches, reports, and many others. This is basically done to ensure that we are going to be ready to be in the corporate world. You see, knowing how to speak doesn’t just make the cut. We have to learn how to properly and formally write these things. This is why we are taught the different types of writing. There are four main types of writing. These four types are narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository.
The narrative types of writing, as the name implies, is basically writing to tell a story. Here, the person writing always writes in the first person. This is because most narrative writings are stories about one’s self or ones experiences. The most common examples of narrative writing are personal essays such as ‘How I celebrated my birthday’. Narrative writing can also be the writer telling a story about something that happened to other people. An example of this is ‘Andrew’s Birthday Celebration’.
Descriptive types of writing, on the other hand, pertains to writing that has the goal of explaining in detail a certain subject such as a person, an idea, a place, or a thing. Essentially, descriptive writing is painting a picture to an audience’s mind – through words. It is important that your reader will be able to picture exactly how you want them to picture your subject. This doesn’t stop at saying what the subject is. It is being able to let the reader see how the subject looks or feels like. It should also let the reader experience the sensation of how the subject is.
The third of the four types of writing is persuasive. The persuasive types of writing are the most sophisticated of the four. The goal of persuasive writing is to be able to plant a thought or idea into the head of the reader. If descriptive writing is like painting a picture, persuasive writing is debating. The writer makes a stance of the subject. He or she should be able to support that subject with facts to be able to convince the reader that what he is reading is true. As the end of the persuasive writing paper, the reader should end up agreeing with what the writer is writing about. It should explain in full details why one should see the subject like he or she does. Sometimes, people even use opinions to ensure that their persuasive writing essays would be convincing.
Lastly, we have the expository types of writing. Expository writing has the goal of letting the reader know certain facts about the subject. Keep in mind that unlike the other types of writing, expository does not include any description, narrations, or opinions. These are the types of writing that just specifies facts and nothing more. These are also the types of writing wherein the writer gives out directions, comparisons, and clarifications. Examples of expository writing are cooking recipes. As you can see, recipes will tell you what to do to achieve a certain outcome.
